What’s the difference between hardback and hardcover? Nothing. Hardcover books go by many names, but they’re commonly made with the same process. It starts with the case binding, which arranges and glues your page contents together into a text block. That text block then adheres to book covers typically made of extemly thick cardboard (2500 Micron) topped with paper, cloth, or another protective fabric. Most hardcover books are also printed on FSC acid-free paper, preserving the quality of your work throughout the years.
The binding method is done by PUR gluing the collated printed sheets a to create a book block. Head and tailbands may be added to produce a more attractive appearance. The next part of the process is to add the cover which is made of several components. End papers are used to hold the pages in place, they can be can be plain or printed. These will be glued to the book block and to the inside front and back covers.
When choosing the various finishes for your hardback book, there are many options available, such as the style of endpapers, tail bands and cover materials. If you opt for a printed cover you can also choose from a variety of finishes to enhance the look and feel. Many hardback cover books also feature a wrap-around paper cover known as a book jacket.
Book jackets help protect the main cover from damage, marking or general wear and tear. Often referred to as a dust jacket they will be often be an integral part of a book’s design and included as part of the book production process. Printed book jackets will typically be laminated with a matt, or gloss finish but there are other options available.
A slipcase can be used to add extra protection, however generally they are used to enhance the overall look of the finished product.
Unlike using a plain cover with a dust sheet, you can print you images onto the hards case and have you design direct onto the board. This is very common with Children’s books and it called a printed hard case cover
